Dear Friends,

Today, (Monday, Jan. 8), the Speaker of the House banged the gavel to kick off the 60-day 2024 legislative session. Key priorities for House Republicans include enhancing public safety, providing a high-quality learning environment for all students, addressing COVID-related learning losses, affordability – combating inflation and boosting our economy, providing affordable housing, and strengthening our transportation infrastructure.  We have a lot of work to do, as you can see by the statistics below.

  • #51 in police officers per capita behind all states and D.C. (WASPC Report)
  • #1 state most impacted by retail theft (Forbes)
  • #2 for all property crime (Statista)
  • #3 for automobile thefts (KIRO)
  • #3 highest gas prices in the nation (Forbes)
  • #4 most expensive state to buy a home (Forbes)
  • #50 in housing units per household (Lt. Gov. Report)
  • #4 highest homelessness rate (US News & World Reports)
  • 70% of students are failing math and 50% are failing reading (OSPI)
  • #9 for most expensive infant childcare (Economic Policy Institute)
  • #1worst state for potholes (USA Today)
  • 60% of roads need maintenance totaling 11,000 miles of backlog and costing $11 billion (Center Square)
  • Fewest working ferries and on-time performance has declined for 5 years (KING 5)

I urge you to get engaged or stay connected if you already follow the Legislature and state government. Politics is not a spectator sport. Given the critical issues before us, standing on the sidelines is not an option. Your involvement could help influence policies before us in Olympia that impact the 19th District and our state.
